It is estimated that as many as 1 person in every 10 has some form of dyslexia, yet the vast majority of individuals have never been tested or diagnosed with an adult learning disability. Even so, people like Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Orlando Bloom, Cher and Whoopie Goldberg are/were dyslexic.

For some, dyslexia can lead to poor short-term memories, limited language skills, poor coordination and low self-esteem. For others, an adult dyslexia test was the first step toward understanding their condition and taking steps to work around it, which has ultimately enriched their lives.

A test for adult dyslexia can be helpful to clarify one’s condition. Often times, a person with dyslexia signs gets misdiagnosed. Right off the bat, many individuals are seen as “underachievers” who simply don’t care about achieving quality marks in school or getting ahead in life. These stigmas and stereotypes can prevent a person from rising above the labels.

Kids are often diagnosed with ADHD anxiety because they’re perceived to be intelligent but fidgety and under-performing. Being put on Ritalin is no way to overcome basic reading difficulties. Others with dyslexia are even viewed as having adults Asperger syndrome, depression or even mild mental retardation because they appear “different” from others. With a proper diagnosis, individuals can expect more reasonable goals and achieve more than ever before.

The adult dyslexia test will aim to find out certain vulnerabilities. First, researchers will inquire into family history. If parents, grandparents or siblings have suffered from dyslexia before, then it’s a more likely conclusion. The next test is usually a reading test that looks for errors, stumble-through reading or slow reading. A spelling test can also be given, which includes short and simple words and words containing easily mixed up letters like “m” and “w” or “b” and “d.” The test may then examine comprehension ability to see that the material is being digested. Tests can identify problems with direction, math and sequencing too, which will often rule out other conditions.

There is more than one adult dyslexia test used to diagnose adult learning disabilities, but one of the most commonly administered is the Lucid Adult Dyslexia Screening test, which is a computerized model that assesses non-verbal reasoning (visual problem solving), verbal reasoning (verbal problem solving), word recognition (lexical decoding involving speeded recognition of real words from non words), word construction (speeded lexical encoding of non-words from syllables) and memory (backwards digit span). The entire test only takes about twenty-five minutes.

Beth Kaminski is the co-author of Curing Your Anxiety And Panic Attacks which detailed anxiety therapy as well as tips on the various panic disorder medications available at anxietydisordercure.com.

Mental illnesses such as panic and anxiety disorders affect millions around the world. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder are amongst the most common. Quality of life can deteriorate dramatically with such disorders.

Daily life may be disrupted constantly if panic and anxiety attacks are frequent. Panic disorder sufferers experience frequent panic attacks which can be extremely terrifying.

There are various symptoms a sufferer may experience. Commonly, symptoms include, tension, fear, apprehension, palpitations and uncontrollable obsessive thoughts. Sufferers may also feel unreal and detached from their surroundings.

It’s hard to understand what a sufferer experiences but for them it’s all too real and terrifying. Their environment may seem distorted and unfamiliar. Odd perceptual distortions or dreamlike sensations may be experienced.

A panic attack can start regardless of state including sleep. Panic attacks are different to anxiety attacks in that they can happen at any time. The fear of having a random attack prevents a sufferer from doing everyday things we take for granted. Day to day chores such as going out to the supermarket can seem impossible for a sufferer.

A negative past experience may be the reason a sufferer avoids a certain situation or place. For example, let’s say that a sufferer has previously had a panic attack in a convenience store. The thought and anticipation of going back may trigger panic and anxiety symptoms.

Stepping back into the same convenience store or another like it is likely to cause a panic attack. This constant fear of having an attack anywhere and anytime can make life unbearable for the sufferer.

Anxiety and panic attacks differ in both symptoms and severity. Normally, anxiety attacks are triggered by everyday stressors. This starts up a stress response which produces similar symptoms to that of a panic attack.

Effective treatment is available for panic and anxiety disorders. In many cases, prescription medication is not necessary since there are natural alternatives. Behavorial therapy for example, has been used successfully by many sufferers.

There are many differences between a panic and anxiety attack. Anxiety attacks are usually triggered by a fearful or stressful situation. Day-to-day stressors are the main cause of anxiety attacks. Practically anything from being late at a meeting, missing the bus or forgetting the laundry can create feelings of worry and fear.

Most people think that an anxiety attack must be related to an anxiety disorder, but this is not the case. It’s perfectly normal to feel confused and nervous at times during stressful situations and experiences. For example, people either hate or love rollercoasters. Each person processes different environmental stimuli and experiences in a different way.

An anxiety attack may produce symptoms such as trembling, nausea and a racing heart. Sometimes these symptoms may last for a few minutes but they usually subside. On the other hand, a panic attack is unpredictable and unprovoked. Panic attacks can occur at any time without warning.

For the sufferer this can be difficult to manage. Knowing that a panic attack could happen without prior warning makes day to day life restrictive. Anxiety disorders differ in symptoms and may not even create anxiety attacks.

Common anxiety disorders such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) may produce symptoms of loss of energy and lethargy. GAD sufferers excessively worry about everyday things that need not worrying about. Obsessing and worrying about the smallest situations and problems can make a sufferer feel incapacitated.

Although panic and anxiety attacks can appear similar, they are very different in severity. Symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness and a real sense of terror. Unfortunately, these attacks can be frequent and last for hours.

Certain places or situations associated with a panic attack, are likely to be avoided by the sufferer in case of a recurring attack. Trying not to constantly worrying about when the next attack will be can be difficult.

Symptoms of panic and anxiety disorders may worsen without treatment. Causes of these disorders include environmental stressors and changes in the brain. In addition, these disorders may be inherited and run in families.

Repeat panic attacks are exhausting and debilitating for sufferers. Fortunately panic and anxiety disorders can be treated. Becoming popular are alternative therapies, such as hypnosis that don’t require medication. These treatments can make a difference to a sufferers life.

Anxiety is a condition in which the sufferer experiences irrational and constant worry or fear in situations where such reactions are not rational. General Anxiety Disorder is a condition in which this worry and fear interferes with professional or family life.

Some of the symptoms of general anxiety include fear of public places (agoraphobia), low self-esteem, lack of confidence, regular or recurring nightmares, fear of failure, excessive crying, and physical symptoms such as diarrhea and nausea. If you exhibit any of those symptoms you should seek treatment, either from a professional or through self-help, rather than worrying about the condition itself.

Anxiety self-help tips are widely available. Not all of the tips you will find will work for you; the efficacy of any single strategy varies from individual to individual. Eventually, through trial and error, you will find a set of tips and strategies that will help you deal with and ultimately resolve your personal anxiety.

anxiety self help

Find out the trigger for your anxiety attack

Finding the cause is always the first line of action to solve any problem and hence to cure panic attacks, you have to first figure out what causes you to panic. For this, you will have to expose yourself to situations that can trigger you so that you can get to the root cause of the anxiety problem using conventional methods instead of medicines.

You can start by identifying all the various triggers that could possibly trigger a negative response in you. Once you have them all listed out, expose yourself to each of them. Now record your response to each one and identify which is most triggering.

Anxiety attacks are usually manifested in response to certain phobias, or fear in general, some kinds of foods or drinks or even due to retained memories of old accidents. These factors trigger different kinds of responses in different people, hence you have to watch and observe yourself closely to find out which one has the worst effect on you.

Avoid these triggers

We all believe that prevention is better than cure and this is exactly how you can deal with anxiety attacks. For example, if you realize that your attacks are triggered by a certain food product try to avoid it or at least reduce the quantity progressively. Usually caffeine is the triggering factor and to avoid this, you need to stop drinking soda’s and energy drinks.

Limit, or eliminate, your alcohol intake as alcohol excites the brain, and add more fluids to your diet. Begin exercising regularly each day so you can vent your stress and anxiety.

Anxiety Self Help Treatment

Practice regular meditation and yoga

Yoga and meditation are not only effective for relaxing your body and mind, it also controls anxiety. At least seven hours of sleep each night is also important in Anxiety Self Help Techniques.

Also, control your anger and be as patient and tolerant as you can be in both actions and thoughts. Anger triggers anxiety and controlling it will reduce levels of anxiety and is a very important anxiety self-help technique. If you try these anxiety self-help ideas, you are bound to find your level of anxiety has been reduced or possibly even eliminated.

Many people look at social anxiety as a high degree of shyness. However, we are talking about something quite different. People with this anxiety disorder can have their whole life ruined; even small and trivial things like paying a visit or taking a train or bus can seem completely impossible for them simply because of the pain the anxiety can cause.

Social anxiety is a diagnoses psychiatrist’s use when a person’s anxiety, in social situations is so strong that he or she has severe problems with functioning in their everyday lives. Many of these patients admit that their thoughts, feelings and actions are dysfunctional, but nevertheless they are not able to stop it. The disorder can be divided in two distinct groups; specialized and generalized. The Specialized disorder is anxiety that occurs in specific social situations, like partying with strangers and walking in a crowd of people.

The generalized disorder is dominated by fear of being judged by others as well as fear of what the patient’s own actions might cause in terms of embarrassment and humiliation. These unhappy individuals simply don’t trust themselves to interact with others; they fear that they will do something that will end up with them being embarrassed or that other people will criticize them harshly.

In addition to psychological symptoms such as severe fear and anxiety, numerous physical symptoms are involved. These can include excessive sweating, trembling, blushing, heart palpitations, nausea, and stammering just to mention a few. Panic attacks can also occur especially if the patient is upset. Severity and duration of these symptoms may vary from person to person.

To avoid the pain anxiety in social situations cause, some people medicate themselves with drugs or alcohol to an excessive point. This doesn’t solve their problems but rather create substance abuse problems in addition to the anxiety problems. Some patients feel they simply can’t function in social situations without substance abuse serving to boost their confidence.

A disorder that has such a negative impact on the patient’s everyday life causes a high demand of various treatments. The supply is accordingly. Fortunately there are other treatments for anxiety in general and social anxiety as well as panic attacks in particular such as herbs, natural remedies, acupuncture and similar as well as alternative psychological therapeutic approaches.

Panic Anxiety – What’s That?

Every year an increasing number of people go to their doctors and complain about stress symptoms like feeling run-down and problems to handle their life. They tell their doctor about weird and often body-related symptoms they have had lately and become almost shocked when he diagnoses them as suffering from panic attacks or anxiety. Most people have probably heard about such diagnoses, without actually knowing what they entail.

The Symptoms of a Panic Attack

It is easy to recognize the symptoms of a panic attack. Most symptoms are located in the upper part of the body.

Symptoms related To the Heart

A frequent and dramatic symptom is heart palpitations. This symptom is characterized by fast increasing heartbeats or the heart pounds very loudly. As a result of the heart pounding, the patient often feels chest pain as well.

Stomach Related Symptoms

Another frequent symptom is related to the stomach, such as nausea and sometimes bloating.

Difficulty Breathing

The third main symptom is problems with breathing. The patients feel they are unable to catch their breath or they feel they don’t get oxygen enough. Sometimes they can feel like they are being suppressed.

Lightheadedness and Dizziness

Dizziness is also very common sometimes to an extent where they feel they will collapse. As a matter of fact, some people do collapse, so also with lightheadedness that some patients get rather than dizziness. They have to sit down to avoid fainting.

Other Body related Symptoms

Other physical symptoms are paleness, hot flashes, chills and other.

In most cases panic attacks last only a very short time but can also last for several minutes.

Why Do Panic Attacks Occur?

Most experts agree that the causes of panic attacks are psychological malfunctioning in the body’s alarm system. The symptoms of panic attack described above are natural reactions for normal persons when they feel their life threatened in one way or another. When a person has a panic attack their body is convinced by their mind that something horrible is going to happen.

As for social anxiety and anxiety in general, fear is considered as the root cause of panic attacks even in cases where the actual fears themselves are different. Most doctors also agree that much life stress can trigger the beginning of panic attacks and that even certain drugs or medications can make some people to experience panic anxiety or attacks.

By our contributing editor

Many individuals have found themselves in situations riddled with panic and asking for anxiety help in some form or fashion. Group behaviors are often quite unsettling for individuals with acute anxiety disorders. These people often struggle to simply be present, and serene, around other people. What if there was a way to interact with other people in a way that anxiety could be discussed openly rather than hidden from? I believe that group therapy is just the prescription for people who are suffering from an anxiety disorder.

I believe there a many excellent rationales for why an individual should be recommended to this type of treatment. There are several common rationales listed for encouraging a person with an anxiety disorder to enter group therapy, including:

Group therapy allows individuals to confront their anxiety in a therapeutic setting, working through it and diffusing panic attacks before they begin.

Group therapy interactions can be examined in detail breaking down the specific feelings that you experienced while participating in the intervention.

Group therapy functions much like primary therapy in effectiveness however it is far less expensive as the cost is balanced throughout all the individuals participating in the group.

Considering these facts, let us take a moment to examine why group therapy should be a treatment methodology of choice for patients of anxiety disorders. Anxiety can be a crippling affliction, however it is one that gets its power from being in the shadows. Like many other pathologies, including compulsive gambling, anxiety gets worse when it is kept as a secret. When anxiety is confronted, and called out into the open, it loses much of its power. Unfortunately, for people who suffer from anxiety, the anxiety symptoms are often very over powering and cause a deep shame since they inhibit normal function so severely. Basically, no one wants to talk about their anxiety issues openly. By using a group an anxiety patient can illuminate their disease, potentially disarming it.

I have seen individuals who are so socially inept that they do not attend any social functions and have no friends come to grips with their social anxiety by facing it in the presence of a group therapist. They are forced, and this can be extremely uncomfortable, to sit in a crowded room and interact with people who they may not know well. Such interactions can at first bring up a lot of emotions. However, in time, they become accustomed to interacting with them and are able to do so with less severe anxiety symptoms.

However, while simply interacting socially in a safe environment can have many benefits for people who suffer from social anxiety, the true benefit of group therapy occurs when anxiety comes up for the patient during the session. Because anxiety is so often kept in the shadows, very infrequently do these people ever get the chance to talk about their anxiety while it is happening. However, with group therapy there is the opportunity, with a therapist, to discuss the anxiety symptoms in plain sight of everyone else and to do so in an emotionally safe fashion. Because of this, the anxiety symptoms, through a process that can be difficult to describe, actually diminish greatly. Talking about anxiety has the effect of limiting the power of the anxiety. But, since the stigma associated with anxiety is so potent, individuals rarely get a chance to discuss openly because they simply do not feel comfortable to do so. As a result the anxiety, thriving in the shadows only grows stronger. Therefore, it is frank discussion of the anxiety in a neutral setting that causes the patient to see a decrease in anxiety symptoms in their outside life.
